Appalling Apparition (#3)

Updated: Aug 20

Below is the 3rd story in my Haunted Storybook House series. If you missed the previous ones, be sure to go back and read them, and see a picture of the house.

Telephone Relics

Remember the ancient relics known as wall-mounted phones with the absurdly long spiral cords? In our household, we proudly displayed one of those gems in the dining room, strategically positioned at the rear of the house by the back door. One day, while Mom was slaving away at work and my sister off chasing balls somewhere, I found myself free to rule the phone waves with my BFF without interruption. I decided to test the lengths of the phone cord, and take the conversation outside to get some fresh air by stepping out the back door onto the patio.

Three, Four, Shut the Door

Now the thing about that back door, was that it was more stubborn than a jar of jelly. You're not getting that thing open or closed without a fight and a good kick in the {censored}. So I always left the door open when on the phone. There I was, chilling on the patio, minding my own business with my back turned to the door when I heard a creaking sound behind me. I swear that door was inching its way closed, y'all!

Tiny Little Watch

My eyes had to be as big as a startled flamingo as I caught a glimpse of a tiny arm wearing a watch, attached to a tiny hand that was holding the door knob on the other side of the door. Nobody's going to lock me out of my house. No sirree. Not on my watch! Wait... I don't own a watch. I kicked that door open like my life depended on it! Only to find an empty room staring back at me.

Motherly Advice

When I shared this horrifying experience with my dear sweet Mom, she was quick to claim it was all in my head. Pfft, as if she could forget my relentless campaign for that Mickey Mouse watch for a solid two years! Besides, my hands were no where near the door knob, they were holding the phone. (I still don't wear watches)
